ZIUG BUG BH
The Bead Head (BH) Zug Bug is a classic, highly effective fly fishing nymph pattern originally created by Cliff Zug in the 1930s.It is a versatile "searching" pattern used globally to catch trout, bluegill, and grayling by mimicking various aquatic insects.
Key Features
- Irresistible Flash: The body is wrapped in iridescent peacock herl, which mimics the natural sheen of underwater bugs and triggers aggressive strikes.
- Rapid Sink Rate: The brass or tungsten bead head (BH) adds weight, forcing the fly deep into the water column where fish feed.
- Precursor to the Prince Nymph: It features a peacock sword tail and a distinct mallard flank wing case, serving as the historical inspiration for the famous Prince Nymph.
Natural Imitations
Rather than mimicking one specific insect, this attractor pattern acts as a general impression of multiple aquatic food sources:
- Cased Caddis Larvae: Its thick, dark profile resembles larvae living inside debris cases.
- Stonefly Nymphs: Larger sizes (#8 to #12) easily pass for crawling stoneflies.
- Mayfly Nymphs: Smaller sizes (#14 to #18) imitate darker species of swimming or clinging mayflies.
How to Fish It
- Dead Drift: Fish it under a strike indicator along the river bottom to match the natural drift of dislodged insects.
- The "Dropper" Rig: Tie it 18–24 inches below a high-floating dry fly to target fish feeding at multiple depths simultaneously.
- The Swing: Let the fly sink, then allow the river current to swing it upward at the end of the drift to simulate an emerging insect swimming to the surface.
