BN HARES EAR
The "BN Hare's Ear" refers to the Beadhead Natural(BN) Gold Ribbed Hare's ear, one of the most effective and universally utilized nymph patterns in the history of fly fishing. This sub-surface "buggy" fly is a generalist pattern that masterfully mimics a massive variety of aquatic insect life.
Why the BN Hare's Ear Works
The magic of the fly lies in its "bugginess". Tied using natural fur cut from a real hare's mask, the mix of soft underfur and stiff guard hairs creates a lifelike texture underwater.
- The Underfur: Traps tiny air bubbles and flutters dynamically in river currents.
- The Guard Hairs: Stick out roughly to mimic the legs and gills of a moving insect.
- The Beadhead: Usually constructed of brass or tungsten to sink the fly rapidly into the feeding zone while adding a subtle catch of light.
What It Imitates
Because it does not copy one specific insect perfectly, it copies almost everything well enough to fool hungry trout. Fish often strike it out of pure opportunism. It naturally imitates:
- Mayfly nymphs
- Caddis larvae and pupae
- Small stonefly nymphs
- Fresh-water scuds and sowbugs
How to Fish It
- Dead Drift: Cast upstream on a nymphing rig or a Euro nymphing setup and let it drift naturally at the same speed as the bottom current.
- The "Leisenring Lift": Near the end of your drift, let the line tighten so the current swings the fly upward toward the surface, mimicking an insect rising to hatch.
- Dry-Dropper Rig: Tie a buoyant dry fly on top, and drop 2 to 3 feet of tippet from the hook bend down to your BN Hare's Ear
