PROFESSOR
The Professor is a classic, early 19th-century fishing fly created by Scottish professor of moral philosophy John Wilson. Originally tied as a wet fly to mimic emerging aquatic insects like mayflies, it features a distinct yellow silk or floss body, a red tail, and a mallard flank wing.
Key Features of the Pattern
- Tail: Red hackle fibers or goose shoulder
- Body: Yellow floss (or blue floss for the "Blue Professor" variation)
- Ribbing: Flat silver or gold tinsel
- Wing: Gray mallard flank or bronze mallard
Today, the fly is a popular "attractor" pattern used to target trout, sea trout, and panfish in both lakes and rivers. While traditionally tied as a winged wet fly, modern tiers have adapted it into dry flies and streamers.
