BIRD'S NEST
The Bird's Nest is a highly versatile and productive fly fishing pattern originally created by California tier Cal Bird in 1959. Acting as a hybrid between a generic nymph and a wingless wet fly, its signature "buggy" and disheveled appearance flawlessly imitates caddis pupae, emergers, and other aquatic insects.
Why Anglers Love the Bird's Nest
- Imitates the Disheveled: Emerging insects are often rumpled and ragtag in the water. The shaggy, loose materials of the Bird's Nest imitate this movement perfectly.
- Versatile Profile: It fishes exceptionally well as a standard nymph, a caddis pupa anchor fly, or swung in a drop-shot Euro-nymphing rig.
- Highly Adaptable: It can be tied in various colors (olive, rusty brown, tan, or natural hare's ear) and sizes to match nearly any hatch.
Standard Recipe & Materials
While the pattern invites creativity, a classic unweighted or beadhead Bird's Nest typically incorporates the following materials:
- Hook: Size 10–20 standard nymph hook (e.g., TMC 3761).
- Thread: Tan or olive 8/0 or 70-denier thread.
- Tail: Lemon wood duck or mallard flank fibers.
- Rib: Fine or brassy copper wire.
- Abdomen & Thorax: Tapered Australian possum or hare's ear dubbing (often a darker color for the thorax for a two-tone effect).
- Collar/Legs: Mallard flank fibers wrapped 360 degrees or tied as a beard.
