PHEASANT TAIL

The Pheasant Tail (PT) Nymph is a century-old, classic artificial fly created by English riverkeeper Frank Sawyer in the late 1950s. It is one of the most effective and versatile flies in the world, designed primarily to imitate the nymphal stages of mayflies, stoneflies, and other aquatic insects.
Key Materials & Design
  • Tail & Body: Fibers stripped from the tail feather of a ring-necked pheasant.
  • Ribbing: Typically fine copper or gold wire, which adds weight, segmentation, and durability.
  • Thorax: Usually made of peacock herl.
  • Variations: Modern adaptations often include a shiny wing case (Flashback Pheasant Tail), a brass or tungsten bead at the head for faster sinking, or a soft partridge hackle for added movement.
How to Fish It
  • Technique: It is mostly fished beneath the surface. You can drift it dead-drift under a strike indicator, swing it downstream, or use modern European-nymphing methods.
  • Induced Take: Sawyer originally designed this heavy, wire-wrapped fly to sink quickly and actively "swim" it upward by stripping it in or raising the rod tip, which tricks nearby fish into striking.
