COACH MAN
The Coachman, one of the most famous and iconic fishing flies in the world. This classic "attractor" pattern is used by fly anglers to catch freshwater fish like trout, grayling, and salmon when no specific insects are hatching.
The Coachman
Originating from a British wet fly used in the 1830s by Tom Bosworth (a carriage driver or "coachman" for British monarchs), it was transformed into its distinct American "Royal" version in 1878 by a New York City fly tier.
The fly is highly recognizable due to its distinct, bright combination of materials:
- Tail: Golden pheasant tippet fibers.
- Body: Peacock herl on the ends with a bright red floss band in the middle.
- Wings: White duck quill or calf tail.
- Hackle: Brown or grizzly rooster hackle.
Variations
The Coachman is tied and fished in a few different ways depending on your target and water conditions:
- Dry Fly: Floats on the surface. Features an upright wing and bushy, flared hackle.
- Wet Fly: Sinks just below the surface. Has swept-back, slit wings and softer hackle.
- Streamer: Tied on longer hooks to imitate small baitfish.
