COPPER JOHN
The Copper John is a classic, highly effective sinking nymph invented by John Barr in the 1990s. It generally imitates a mayfly nymph but acts as an excellent all-purpose attractor. Thanks to its copper wire and bead head, it sinks quickly to the riverbed.
Key Characteristics
- Fast Sinking: The heavy copper body and brass or tungsten bead allow it to plummet into deep feeding lanes, making it ideal for fast water.
- General Imitation: Its slim profile works well to represent mayflies, stoneflies, and caddis larvae.
- Durability: The tightly wrapped copper wire and coated wing case hold up exceptionally well to multiple fish.
Typical Materials & Anatomy
- Hook: 2X-long, 2X-heavy nymph hook (sizes 10–22).
- Head: Gold or copper brass/tungsten bead.
- Tail: Brown goose or turkey biots (often tied split).
- Abdomen: Copper, red, or chartreuse UTC wire.
- Thorax: Peacock herl.
- Wing Case: Thin Skin or turkey tail with a strip of Flashabou.
- Legs: Hungarian partridge or hen hackle.
How to Fish It
- Dropper Rigs: It makes an excellent anchor fly on a double-nymph rig or beneath a larger dry fly ("hopper-dropper"). It pulls the lighter flies down into the strike zone.
- Dead Drift: Cast it upstream and let it bounce along the bottom with a natural drift, similar to a real aquatic insect
