CONEMARA BLACK & YELLOW

The Connemara Black is a legendary, traditional Irish wet fly originally designed for trout fishing on the loughs of western Ireland. It incorporates a distinct yellow element via its golden pheasant crest tail. This highly effective pattern imitates dark aquatic insects like midges, duck flies, or sedges.
Traditional Material Dressing
To tie the authentic version of this classic loch-style fly, use the following pattern recipe:
  • Hook: Size 6 to 14 standard down-eyed wet fly hook.
  • Thread: Black tying silk.
  • Tail: Golden pheasant crest feather (providing the signature bright yellow/gold accent).
  • Body: Black seal's fur or substitute dubbing.
  • Rib: Fine round silver tinsel or silver wire.
  • Body Hackle: Black cock or hen hackle.
  • Throat/Beard: Striking blue jay wing feather fibers.
  • Wing: Dark, mottled bronze mallard.
Variations
Tie or purchase the pattern with these alternate variations:
  • Connemara Variant: Uses hen hackle fibers dyed bright yellow for the tail and an orange wool butt segment at the tail base.
  • Muddler Version: Built with a spun deer hair head to create extra water disturbance when fished as a top dropper.
  • Dabbler Version: Tied with a more heavily wrapped, longer hackle profile for wave-heavy stillwater fishing.
Fishing Techniques
  • Stillwaters: Use a fast-sinking or intermediate line on a lake, pulling the fly slowly and deeply, or use it as a middle dropper in a multi-fly team.
  • Running Streams: Cast the fly diagonally across and down a river current, allowing it to swing across pools where trout or sea trout feed
